About The Author

Shaykh Ahmad Zarruqرحمة الله عليه was the 15th century Maliki scholar and Muhaddith. Shaykh Ahmad Zarruq lived the life of a reformist saint, who devoted his life to spiritual cultivation, juridical reasoning, and social critique. His paradigm of the juridical saint was his way of ensuring the balance between both of those religious disciplines (fiqh and tasawwuf), which he perceived as having become fermented and dispersed. He argued that the juridical sufi, by juxtaposing devotion and law, sincerity and rectitude, had an intensified authority, as if he were the human embodiment of usul al-fiqh.
